Scope: A Grid-Based Evolution of Type, Motion, and Nostalgia
Role:
Type Designer & Motion Animator
Overview
The Snake Game is more than just a nostalgic childhood memory; it is a masterclass in constraint. Played on a rigid 8x8 grid, every movement is a calculated decision. This project explores the intersection of typography and gameplay, transforming the fluid, unpredictable path of a digital snake into a structured font family.
Original Typeface
I create 3–5 variant typefaces for each individual letter based on the way the Snake game is played on an 8x8 grid. As my original typeface, I chose the one that looks the most consistent and unique for each letter.
Alternate Alphabet
The charm of the snake game is in its playability and unpreditability. Every player plans their next move differently on the 8x8 grid. As such, I chose another series as an alternative alphabet for my font.
Dead Alphabet
However, there’s always an end to any game. For the snake game, when the snake touches itself, the game is over! Therefore, I envision the snake's demise in the original typeface, which inspired the creation of this font series.
